Alpine California Information
From parts of the four counties of El Dorado, Amador, Tuolomne, and Calavares, Alpine County was formed in the year 1864, discovered by Kit Carson and John Fremont. It is situated between the south of Lake Tahoe and North of Yosemite. The cause of the creation in the mid-1800’s, was due to the boom of the silver mining industry. Population grew to about 11,000 in 1860, wherein the people’s livelihood was mining, ranching, and logging. The silver industry encountered problems with the collapse of the silver boom forcing the mines to close and population decreased.
In terms of population, the county of Alpine is considered the smallest in California, with only about 1,200 residents and out of the 58 counties in California, it is the eighth smallest. Because of its mountainous landscape, snow-covered peaks and beautiful forests, the county was named Alpine, which means lofty mountain. The county seat is Markleeville, a small, old-fashioned city with peaks of Sierra Nevada as its backdrop. This is where most of the offices of the county are located.
Today, the main industry of Alpine County is tourism. Lovers of nature and the outdoors often come here to marvel at the beauty, fresh air, and the numerous recreational activities that Alpine has to offer. Some of the various activities to choose from is hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, rafting, snowboarding, skiing, and biking. Grover Hot Springs State Park is a popular spot for its hot pool, camping grounds and picnic grounds, and hiking trails. During a hike, visitors can marvel at the site of Hot Springs Creek Falls, a 50-foot high waterfall, which is especially beautiful in spring.
The Alpine County Museum Complex provides visitors a glimpse of the rich and colorful history of Alpine County. The museum exhibits relics from the 1860’s during the silver mining boom like equipments and tools from the 19th century, wagons and mining tools and equipments used by the early inhabitants. The original log jail and schoolhouse is also featured.
