Amador California Information

Amador County, also known as The Heart of the Gold Country”, is about 45 miles to the east of Sacramento and Stockton cities. News of the gold strike in California sent gold seekers, also known as the 49er’s, to the gold fields, in search of a better life. Founded in 1854, it was named after a rich ranchero, Jose Maria Amador. The Spanish word Amador in English means “one who loves gold.” During the California Gold Rush in 1849, immigrants came to this community famous for its mineral deposits and gold mines.

The approximate population of this county is 40,000. Amador City, Jackson, Ione, Plymouth, and Sutter Creek are the five incorporated cities, with Jackson as its county seat. Unincorporated cities, each with a rich historical past, are Drytown, Fiddletown, Jackson Rancheria, Pine Grove, Pioneer, and Volcano.

There are various activities to engage in at Amador County. On a warm, summer day, one can go biking, hiking or golfing. One can make an underground tour of Sutter Gold Mine and learn about the equipments used and how it worked. The Kennedy Mine, which was the richest and deepest gold mine, may also be visited where a short film showing the miners at work during the early 1900’s. There are about 13 lakes and rivers to choose from to go fishing, swimming, camping, and boating. Outdoor activities during the winter months include skiing and snowshoeing at Bear River Lake Resort, El Dorado National Forest or one of America’s best ski resort, Kirkwood Ski Resort. From March to April, visitors from around the globe, enjoy the beauty of Daffodil Hill, a four-acre privately-owned farm with over 300 different varieties of daffodils, bulbs, and flowers.

There are more than 30 wineries in Amador County producing some of America’s best zinfadels. Grapes are grown in almost 3,000 acres of land, some of which dates back to the late 1800’s. While wine tasting, one can’t help but admire the beautiful view of the valleys, river canyons and the Sierra.

Amador County is a relaxing, peaceful place, definitely far from the hustle and bustle of city life.
