In 1775, while exploring the coastline of Northern California, Don Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, a Spanish diplomat, explorer and naval officer, discovered Bodega Bay. This town in Sonoma County with its beautiful seascapes and peaceful ambience is situated on the Pacific Coast about an hour and half drive from San Francisco.
It has a small population numbering only about 1,600. The household median income is about $57,000 and the per capita income is at about $38,000.
A number of major films have been shot in this town. Among them are The Pack in 1977, The Goonies in 1985, Sleepwalkers in 1997. But the movie “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock in 1963 made this town famous worldwide.
Considered a fishing and ranching community, it has just started with the sea urchin industry to provide for the demand of sea urchin roe to the Japanese market.
Bodega Bay is the entry point to the Sonoma Coast State Beach, a California State property and one of the state’s most scenic attractions. It is also home to the Bodega Marine Laboratory which is under the management of University of California Davis.
Moderate climate is enjoyed by residents of Bodega Bay. Winter months bring rain, windy and cool during spring, summer usually has early morning low clouds which clears by midday, and sunny and warm during fall.
There are endless things to do in Bodega Bay like trout, salmon, rock cod, and albacore fishing, golfing at the 18-hole Bodega Harbour Golf Links, horseback riding at the canyon hills or along the coast of Sonoma, kayaking, windsurfing, whale watching, bird watching, scuba diving, biking or even enjoy a romantic, quiet stroll along the scenic surroundings. Dining at the Seaweed Café is also a must. Given a high ranking both for food and service, it is considered the best restaurant in Bodega Bay.
