A town in the county of San Mateo, Colma, which was incorporated in 1924, has a small population of only about 1,300. Situated five miles south of San Francisco, the total land area is 1.9 square miles, 73% of which is for cemetery use.
During the Gold Rush era, hundreds of thousands migrated to San Francisco many of them with diseases which eventually led to deaths. The twenty six cemeteries in the city were full, so new properties had to be bought by cemetery owners. To add to the problem, the Board of Directors of San Francisco in 1900 voted that there will be no more burial allowed in the city. They chose Colma because of transportation reasons and its accessibility. With 17 cemeteries, the dead population is more than those of the living, hence the name, City of the Silent or the City of the Dead. There is also one pet cemetery, where Tina Turner’s pet dog, wrapped in her fur coat, is buried. Notable people buried in this city are Joshua Abraham Norton, United States’ Emperor and Protector of Mexico, William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper tycoon, William Henry Crocker, a business magnate, Joe DiMaggio, world famous baseball player, Pat Brown, 32nd California governor, and A.P. Giannini, founder of Bank of America, among others.
Businesses during these years were mostly related to the dead like flower shops, tombstone and headstone makers. Today, there are other types of businesses including car dealerships, Home Depots, and shopping centers, the Serra Center and 280 Metro Center, the first power center ever recognized.
