Daly City CA Information

A city in the county of San Mateo with the biggest population, a little over 103,000, 50% of which are Asian, Daly City, is just about 8 miles south of San Francisco’s downtown and nine miles of San Francisco International Airport.  It is dubbed as the Gateway to the Peninsula.

On the 18 th of March 1911, the city was incorporated.  It was named after John Daly, a businessman who helped numerous people who came to the city.

Bordering the city are Brisbane, Colma, Pacifica, San Francisco, and South San Francisco.

The League of California Cities Helen Putnam Awards of Excellence has been awarded to Daly City four times between the years 1997 to 2005. 

U.S. Highway 101 and Interstate 280 are the two major highways that bisect Daly City.  The Bay Area Rapid Transit system or BART also serves the city.

The California School Recognition Program recognized the Jefferson Elementary School District as an Honorable Mention School.The city is being served by five public school districts.  The Westlake School for the Performing Arts is also located in the city. 

Among the major employers of the city are the Seton Medical Center with a little over 1,500 employees and the Jefferson School District with about 1,400 employees.   Retail business is also booming.  Shopping centers within Daly City are the retail corridor of Mission Street, Serramonte Center, and Westlake Shopping Center.  Pacific Plaza has an office building, a cinema complex, and retail stores.

Daly City enjoys a cool climate.  Several recreation sites are well-maintained and open to the public.  Numerous activities are offered not only for children, but for adults as well.  Parasailers consider the coastal dunes of this city a favorite spot.

The racial makeup of the city was 25.90% White, 4.56% African American, 0.44% Native American, 50.69% Asian, 0.91% Pacific Islander, 11.32% from other races, and 6.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.27% of the population. (2000 Data)
