Del Norte California Information

In 1857, a bill was proposed to create a new county and name it Buchanan, who was the current US president at that time. But the legislature rejected the name and insisted to name it Del Norte, a Spanish word which means “of the north”, rightly named as this county is at California’s northwestern tip.

Two native-American tribes, the Yuroks on the south of the Klamath River and the Tolowas on the north of the Smith River, lived in this county. They lived on fish and acorns until in 1850, white settlers moved in when gold was discovered and they were forced to leave.

The county covers a total of 1,008 square miles and has an approximate population of 28,000. Its cities are Bertsch-Oceanview, Crescent City North, Klamath, and Crescent City, which is the county seat.

Tourism and recreation are the vital factors in Del Norte’s economy. Attractions are plentiful. The Smith River National Recreation Area features one of United States’ largest scenic and wild river systems, the Smith River. Horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, fishing, and rafting are among the activities offered. The world’s tallest trees, the redwoods, can be found at the Redwood National and State Park, which is almost 500,000 acres of forest lands. The tallest and the most expensive lighthouse which took eleven years to build by the government of the U.S., the St. George Reef Lighthouse, built in 1867, is also in this county. Sea lion and whale viewing is possible at Pebble Beach Drive in Crescent City.

There are four elementary schools, four-Kindergarten to eighth grade schools, and one high school serving approximately 4,000 students run by the Del Norte County Unified School District. Providing two-year programs is the College of the Redwoods branch situated in Crescent City.

The unspoiled, uncrowded, mesmerizing beauty and awesome experience of nature are the reasons for wanting to stay at Del Norte County.
