El Dorado California Information

The name “El Dorado” is one shrouded with legend and mystery.  A Spanish term meaning “the gilded one,” it came from the legend of a South American tribal chieftain who covered himself with gold during the performance of religious rites.  It evolved into a myth of a land of genial clime and never-fading abundance, where gold literally lined the streets and buildings and wine flows gently from streams and fountains.

When gold was discovered by James W. Marshall in Coloma in January 1848, the legend came to the fore once more and the particular place was thereby named “El Dorado”- a name befitting a region rich in gold.

El Dorado County is located in the “gold country” of California, along the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  It is one of the 27 original counties of California.  The county is home 176,204 Californians spread across its 1,711 square miles of land.  It has nine cities and towns, namely: Cameron Park, Diamond Springs, El Dorado, El Dorado Hills, Georgetown, Pollock Pines, Shingle Springs, South Lake Tahoe, and Placerville – the county seat.  Its adjacent counties are Alpine County in the southeast; Amador County in the south; Sacramento and Placer Counties in the north; and Douglas County in the northeast.  The county’s climate varies due to the diversity of its topography.  Generally, the county has a mildly warm climate, which goes to mildly cool on higher elevations.

The county’s economy is anchored in its traditional resource extraction industries, which includes mining, oil and gas, lumber and wood products, paper, and allied products.  However, due to the development of El Dorado real estate in the past years, the fields of medicine and education has also grown to address the equally growing needs of the populace.  Primary, secondary, and post-secondary teachers are among the occupations with the fastest job growth with a projected increase of 73% in the period covering 2002-2012.  High wage occupations include dentists ($85.74 hourly mean), surgeons ($77.95), obstetrics – gynecologists ($77.90), and physicians ($72.54).

Belying its traditional image as a sleepy mining county, El Dorado offers an exciting array of recreational activities to its residents and visitors alike.  Among the more popular outdoor activities include rafting, skiing, snowboarding, horseback riding, paintball, and dirt track car racing.  Those who opt for a more relaxing activity may take up trail hiking, camping, fishing and boating, gold panning, and golf.  The county’s parks, rivers, trails, breweries, art galleries, theaters, shopping centers, wineries, apple hills, and museums are scattered across the county for the enjoyment of its real estate owners and buyers.
