Dubbed as “California’s New Frontier,” Fresno is the no. 1 agricultural county in the nation. Located in the central valley of the state of California, the county has a total area of 15,585 square kilometers, 142 square kilometer of which is water and a population of 850, 650. It is bordered on the west by the Coast Range, on the east by the Sierra Nevada, on the south by Stockton and to the north by Bakersfield. The county seat is in Fresno and it has seven cities.
The county was discovered by Spaniards looking for suitable mission sites and became a property of the United States as a result of the Mexican War. Its name was variously attributed to the Fresno Creek, or to “Fresno” a Spanish term for ash tree and it was due to the abundance of mountain ash or ash trees in the area.
Although agriculture is the backbone of its economy, the county also has Industries providing employment such as Educational, Health and Social Services accountinf for 22.8% and Retail Trade for 11.2%. Majority of the population are of Hispanic origin or 44%. The population of the county is considered young as it has a median age of 29.9 years. Average household size is 3.09 and average household income is $34,725. About 29% of the population is foreign born. There were 270,767 housing units at an average density of 18/km˛ (45/mi˛)
In addition, Fresno celebrates the beauty and flavor of agriculture through The Fresno County Blossom Trail in the spring and the Fresno County Fruit Trail in the summer and a series of annual events from old-fashioned hometown festivals, to rodeos, to cultural celebrations to the largest harvest fair in California – Fresno is the place for wholesome and affordable family fun!
This historic County is a tourists "land of opportunity". There are several cultural events and theatrical productions of note. There's the annual Clovis Rodeo in April, High Sierra Sailing Regattas in July, a Civil War Reenactment in October and the trek to the Nation's Christmas Tree in December! There is also the fasciniating "Underground Garden.". The Shaver Lake Region in the Sierra National Forest is for outdoor enthusiasts. In here they could hunt, camp, ride horses, take pack trips, enjoy bike trails, snow ski, sail, explore off-road destinations, water ski, swim, challenge white water rapids and snowmobile into the wilderness.
