In 1979, the Gilroy Garlic Festival started and has since been attracting more than one hundred thousand tourists.
On March 12, 1870, Gilroy was incorporated. During these years the city became known as United States’ Tobacco Capitol having the largest factory of cigars in the world producing more than a million cigars per month.
In the 1880’s, Swiss and Europeans began arriving. Cheese-making and dairying then became the city’s industry and it became known as California’s Dairy and Cheese Capitol.
It also earned the title of California’s Prune Capitol in the 1920’s as acres of orchards grew prunes along with apples, peaches, and plums.
During the First World War, large quantities of garlic were grown by the Japanese farmers. In 1979, the Gilroy Garlic Festival started and has since been attracting more than one hundred thousand tourists. For this, the city was named the world’s Garlic Capitol.
Located in the county of South Santa Clara between the mountains of Diablo and Santa Cruz, the approximate population is at a little over 40,000. The climate is ideal for both recreation and agriculture.
In education, the Gilroy Unified School District has 13 public schools which serve almost 9,000 children. Four hundred students are being served by the five private schools in the city and Gavilian College serve about 4,500 students.
Gilroy received the most number of awards for park designs in the whole of California which was given by the California Park and Recreation Society. The city has 12 parks which offers camping, golfing, hiking, and mountain biking.
The city has shopping centers, downtown, and industrial businesses. It is the perfect place for businesses as it is near Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.
Shopping may be enjoyed at the 145 stores from branded clothings, to kitchen wares to bed and bath items at affordable prices.
