Half Moon Bay California Information

A city in San Mateo County, California, Half Moon Bay is approximately 25 miles south of San Francisco, 10 miles west of San Mateo, and 45 miles north of Santa Cruz.  Sitting on a bay by the same name, it is a comfortable driving distance from the towns of Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada to the north, and San Gregorio and Pescadero to the south.  It has a total land area of 6.5 square miles of lush real estate situated between the majestic Santa Cruz Mountains and some of the most breath taking pacific coastlines California has to offer.  Home to around 12 thousand people, it was incorporated in 1959, though early settlement could be traced back to the 1840s, making it the oldest community in San Mateo County.  Historically, it has also been referred to as San Benito and Spanishtown, and traces of its past could still be gleamed from its numerous historic buildings.

While fishing and tourism are counted as one of the major industries of the city, agriculture remains as its primary economic backstop.  Pumpkin is its most popular commodity along with houseplants, floriculture, Christmas trees and artichokes.  Roadside stands selling its farm’s produce are prevalent in Half Moon Bay.  Fresh seafood stalls are likewise abundant within the city.  Visitors could opt to let the locals cook it for them or they could just take it home.  These leading industries are supported by Half Moon Bay’s mild temperatures, fertile valleys, and abundant waters.

One of the most popular spots in the city is the Jetty or “The Breakwater,” a man-made break with unusual waves shaped by the reflections from the breakwater at the Pillar Point Harbor. Visitors could come and witness the city’s attractions either by road or through the Half Moon Bay Airport.  Other attractions in the city include the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, the only brewery in San Mateo County; the world famous Mavericks surf break where an “invitation only” big wave surfing contest for big name surfers are held every year; the annual “Art and Pumpkin Festivals,” visited by over 250,000 guests every October; and Cameron’s Pub Restaurant, owner of “The World’s Only Double Decker Video Game Bus.”

The Pumpkin Festival is an annual event where the residents of Half Moon Bay pay homage to their most popular agricultural product.  The city hosts pumpkin-centered events and competitions such as cooking, pumpkin pie baking, pumpkin carving, and the heaviest pumpkin.  Visitors go home satisfied that it is not a rarity to see them flock again for the same event the following year.

Golf enthusiasts may also come and enjoy either one of the two of California’s finest golf courses for a round of golf.  Numerous other recreational opportunities can be found in the city’s more than 100 acres of park, open spaces, and recreational facilities which include bike paths, dog exercise areas, a lighted softball and baseball field, soccer fields, lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic facilities, and a wildlife refuge.
