The city got its name from William Hayward, who during the middle of the 1800’s owned 40 acres of land. He also owned a trading store and built Hayward’s Hotel, one of the finest resorts during those times.
Because of its moderate climate and fertile soil, Hayward was named Heart of the Garden of Eden as everything grew in abundance – from produce to chickens to cattle to flowers. It also became known as the Apricot City during the 1950’s. Hunt’s Cannery called Hayward home. By 1960, shopping centers and subdivisions were built causing a swell in population. Today, its approximate population is at 155,000. It is also now known as the Heart of the Bay because of its location being near San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Pleasanton. It is a large city ranked number six in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Hayward Unified School District serves students from Kinder to 12th grade. Five high schools serve Hayward. Colleges and universities in the city include California State University, East Bay, Chabot College, and Zaytuna Institute.
Hayward is host to special yearly events like the Hayward/Russell City Blues Festival, Cultures in Harmony Festival, and the Zucchini Festival. Residents and visitors alike may visit The C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology and the Hayward Area Historical Society Museum.
The city boasts of numerous parks and facilities. The Kennedy Park has a carousel, a train, a petting zoo, and kids may enjoy the pony rides it offers.
Hayward is a culturally diverse community. Its residents are a mix of Hispanic, Caucasian, Asian, and African American. It is among the top 15 culturally diverse communities in the United States.
