The most populous county in the United States, the County of Los Angeles is home to more than 10 million residents. As of 2004, the county’s population is larger than the population of 43 states. It is composed of a total of 137 incorporated cities and census-designated places combining to form a total land area of 4,061 square miles. Most of the county’s coastal area as well as the southern and central portions are highly urbanized. A large expanse of lesser-populated regions can be found in the inland desert areas and the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. The desert region comprises 40% of the county’s total land area.
The County of Los Angeles borders on the Pacific Ocean and is adjacent to the counties of Ventura (west), Kern (north), San Bernardino (east) and Orange (south). It is further divided into 6 major divisions: East, West, South, North, Central, and Greater Los Angeles area. Real estate options in the county are as vast and as diverse as its populace. There are ranches, beachfront properties, multi-unit structures, old-fashioned houses, countryside manors, and many more options to choose from.
The largest number of residents of the county can be found in the City of Los Angeles, which is also the county seat. L.A. has 3,847,400 residents. Although the City of L.A. is commonly associated with the entertainment industry, all of the major studios, except Paramount Pictures are now located outside its boundaries. The other major studios like the Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros., Sony Pictures Entertainment, and DreamWorks SKG can now be found in the neighboring cities of Burbank, Glendale, and Culver City. Cities with a large number of residents include: Long Beach (461,522), Glendale (205,300), Santa Clarita (151,088), Pomona (149,473), Palmdale (143,227), Torrance (137,946), Pasadena (133,936), Lancaster (127,019), and El Monte (119,900).
