Mendocino County Information
Situated in the northern coast of California, Mendocino County is one of the original counties of the state. Together with the counties of Humboldt and Trinity, they form what is known as the Emerald Triangle, which is cut off from the rest of California by the tall redwood trees that line its borders. The county boasts of very rich topsoil, which, coupled by its relatively mild climate, is very conducive to a wide array of vegetation.
Mendocino County is what could be called a “frontier county.” Less than 5% of its area is cultivated or in town sites. The county has always been sparsely populated. After its creation in 1850, the population was too low that it had to be administered from the neighboring Sonoma County for eight years. During that time, there was just not enough people to handle local government affairs.
At present, the county has a total land area of 3,509 square miles and a population of 88,161. The county seat is located in Ukiah – the number one best small town to live within California and the 6th best place to live in the United States according to “The Best Small Towns in America” by Norman Crampton. It is also home to the world famous Vichy Springs, known for their champagne baths, and is also known to be the number one producer of Bartlett pears in the world.
While the county is set on a rural backdrop characterized by quaint communities, there are a number of recreational activities that residents and visitors could choose from. Mendocino County offers excellent sites for cycling, boating and water sports, fishing, hiking, hunting, swimming, and horseback riding. The county also has challenging and well-kept golf courses and tennis courts.
Aside from being a leading producer of Bartlett Pears, other agricultural products of the county include sheep and cattle, grapes, wine, vegetables, and timber. Due to the fertility of the county’s vast lands, most of the real estate has at least a small organic farm. Soil fertility also accounts as one factor contributing to the county’s numerous American Viticulture Areas (grape growing regions). Its wineries produce some of the most prestigious labels in the nation, including Fetzer, Parducci, Frey, and Bonterra.
Mendocino County is a welcome respite from the pressures brought about by big-city living. Either as a visitor or a permanent resident, everyone would agree that the county is one of the most relaxing and livable places in the United States.
