Modoc California Information

In February of 1874, from the eastern part of the county of Siskiyou, the county of Modoc was created.  The Indians called this county of plateaus, valleys and mountains, “The Smiles of God”.  Hundreds of these Indians lost their lives defending this land from the white settlers.

It is bounded to the north by Oregon State and to the east by Nevada State. Its approximate population is 10,000 and about 4,000 household.  The total land area is 4,203 square miles, 3,944 of which is land and 672 is water.  Alturas is the county seat. 

Some of the places to visit are the Modoc County Historical Museum in Alturas, which displays artifacts of the Native Americans, an antique gun collection, and household items used by the early families of the county all of which are over a hundred years old.  The Modoc National Wildlife Refuge also in Alturas and founded in 1960, is a 6,700-acre sanctuary for migratory geese, ducks, swans, and cranes and offers hunting, fishing, educational programs, and photography sites. California’s largest identified volcano and thought to be California’s most diverse volcanic field, Medicine Lake Highlands, which is in the northwestern edge of the county, features volcanic formations like obsidian or glass flows, cinder cones, lava tubes, and pumice deposits.  The Modoc National Forest, a national forest with more than 1.5 million acres, with abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery, feature mountains, lakes, rugged canyons, plateaus, pine forests, wetlands, and lava beds. Recreational opportunities in the four season climate of Modoc County are numerous like hiking, biking, camping, snow shoeing, snow mobiling, and cross country skiing. 

Government, services, manufacturing, agriculture, and wholesale and retail are the major employers of this county.
