Oakland CA Information
Oakland is the sister city to San Francisco, stretching across half of the immense Bay area. The current population is just short of 400,000 people. The city has been named for the multitude of evergreen oak trees growing around the city. Oakland has a vast history; it was the center of American shipbuilding during the First World War and has gone through many bumps and bruises in recent memory. The city was nearly torn apart during the 1989 Bay Area eathquake and was the site of the double decker Nimitz freeway collapse that occured during the earthquake.
Oakland has recovered from natural disasters and urban plagues such as failing schools and high crime by establishing ambitious but successful development projects in the downtown. Oakland is now one of the leaders in the low income housing market and overall housing prices are much lower than in San Francisco or other major American cities.
