The smallest county in Southern California, Orange County however is the second most populous county in the State of California and the fifth most populous area in the whole United States. Located at the Center if Southern California’s Tech Coast, it has a total land area of 2,455 square kilometers, 411 square kilometers of which is water. It has a total population of 2,987,591 and a household population of 1,001,670. It has an average household income of $84,355, the fifth largest among the counties of California.

The county’s name was given due to its extensive orange groves. The county seat is located in Santa Ana and it has 34 incorporated cities, the newest being Aliso Viejo, which is also the only city to incorporate since 2000.

It is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Los Angeles County, on the northeast by San Bernardino County, on the east by Riverside County and on the south by the San Diego County.

Residents often divide the county into “North County” and “South County” as opposed to East-West division characterized by coastal and inland cities. Its varied terrain is reflective in the different area’s around the county The rich soil in northern and central Orange County produced barley wheat, grapes, walnuts, oranges and lemons. Dairy farms prospered in Cypress and La Palma. To the south, Dana Point and Newport Beach are busy harbors; Cattle and sheep roamed the wide-open ranchos of inland south county. Communities are located in the county's northern, central and western areas, Now, the county's newest cities are forming in the maturing communities of the south county.

Known as the “American Riviera”, the county offers 40 miles of continuous beautiful shoreline, constant sunshine and a wonderful climate. With its adjoining freeways and excellent road networks, Orange County is strategically located to enjoy the amenities of its more illustrious neighbor the Los Angeles County. Apart from offering some of the most beautiful beaches on the West Coast, such as the Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Capistrano Beach Orange County California can boast of some of the area's major attractions including Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, Edison International Field, the Anaheim Convention Center, Bowers Museum, Balboa Fun Zone, Crystal Cathedral, Wild Rivers Water Park, Santa Ana Zoo and Irvine Spectrum among others

Due to its proximity to Los Angeles, many celebrities and likewise celebrity struck fans have moved or bought second houses here, where some of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the United States are located.
