Located in the Sierra Nevada, in what is known as the California gold country, Placer County stretches from the suburbs of Sacramento to Lake Tahoe and the Nevada State border. It was created from the parts of Sutter and Yuba counties in 1851, and took its name from the method of extracting gold from the earth, called placer mining, which was practiced in numerous places within the county. The county seat is located in Auburn, which has one of the best-preserved historic downtowns in the State of California. It used to be the shipping and supply center of hundreds of gold camps during the gold rush.
Placer County has a total land area of 1,404 square miles. It is one of the fastest growing counties in the state, mainly due to the expansion of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. From its population of 248,399 in the year 2000, it has ballooned to 307,004 in 2004. 2005 figures show a population of 317,028. Lincoln, one of the counties incorporated cities, shows one of the fastest growth rate for a city in the entire State of California.
The county, likewise, has one of the fastest growing business communities in the state. From having gold mining as the major industry in the 1880s, its residents eventually turned to farming the fertile soils of the foothills, cutting timber, and working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. At present, Placer County is home to a very diverse industry and business interests. It is currently the 6th wealthiest of the Bay Area counties.
