Santa Barbara California Information

Located along the pacific coast of California, west of Ventura County, Santa Barbara is a county known for its distinct economic and topographical diversity.  The northern and southern parts of the county display certain characteristics that are exclusive to their respective regions.  This has led to two separate proposals that called for the county’s division into two separate counties.  The first proposal occurred in 1978, when some residents of the north lobbied for the creation of a Los Padres County out of the northern part of the county.  Recently, a second proposal was made, this time calling for the creation of Mission County out of the same northern area.  The county concluded that the proposed county would not be economically viable and was subsequently turned down by the voters on June 2006.

The most glaring differences of the north and south lies on their economy and real estate.  The north is dependent on agriculture and oil production for its economy and provides very affordable real estate options.  It is also the site of a large military base – the Vandenberg Air Force Base.  Meanwhile the south’s economy is anchored on tourism, education, as well as on software and other high-tech products manufacturing.  It is the location of University of California – Santa Barbara.  The south is also the site of more expensive real estate, especially those strewn along the coastline, which was referred to as the “American Riviera.”  Although it has a more expensive real estate, the south has a larger concentration of people compared to the north.

Santa Barbara County was once the home of the Chumash Tribe of Native Americans.  It was created in 1850 as one of the original counties of California.  Parts of the county’s territory were given to Ventura County in 1872.  At present, the county has a total land area of 2,737 square miles, including the islands of San Miguel, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa.  The California Department of Finance estimates its 2006 population to be 421,625.  The county seat is located in the City of Santa Barbara, while the largest city is Santa Maria.

Santa Barbara Real Estate

Santa Barbara County real estate is one of the most sought after in recent years.  Aside from the numerous commercial, employment, and recreational opportunities offered by the county, it is also the choice of people who are in search of a healthy lifestyle.  The air quality in the county is generally better compared to the other counties of Southern California mainly due to the prevailing winds off the Pacific Ocean and the county’s sound environmental programs.

Santa Barbara County is the perfect setting to raise a happy family.  Lush, sun-drenched, enchanting, and breathtaking, it is definitely one of America’s best kept secrets.  From its dramatic coastline to the Santa Ynez Mountains, to the rugged Channel Islands and the burgeoning wine country, Santa Barbara County is a land teeming with natural beauty, creativity, and sophistication where one could bask at its warm sunshine and enjoy its countless recreational opportunities while remaining attuned to Mother Nature.
