The county boasts of 959 square miles of scenic beauty, rivers, mountain lakes and streams, forested canyons, more than a hundred year old ranching and logging communities, and North America’s largest alpine valley, the Sierra Valley. With an approximate population of 3,550, it is the second least populated county in the state of California. Elevation ranges from 2,200 to 8,900 feet. From the Sierra City, one can view a regional landmark, the magnificent Sierra Buttes Mountain, which has an elevation of 8,600 feet.
Discovered in the county seat of Downieville are several large nuggets. It is also Northern mines’ trading center in the 1800’s and home to the oldest weekly newspaper in California, the Mountain Messenger. In 1853, Downieville almost became California’s state capital but lost by only ten votes.
Abundant in the county are historic sites like the Masonic Hall which was built in 1864 and is the oldest building in Sierra City, the Brick Store, and the Sierra Valley Lodge.
The per capita personal income in the year 2000 of this county is $25,051 which was ranked 26th in the State of California.
Sierra County has more than 40 alpine lakes. The Sierra Buttes Lakes Basin Recreation area has various activities to offer like kayaking, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing, rafting.
Sierra County is a rural environment with friendly, exceptional people, good schools with low student-teacher ratios, numerous recreational opportunities, with clean, fresh air and no traffic lights plus wildflowers during spring and early summer, blanket of snow during winter, and spectacular autumn colors.
