Sonoma County is one of California’s original counties and was created in 1850.  It is situated in the heart of the world famous California wine county region.  It is proud of its more than 200 award winning wineries which produce numerous kinds of wines like red, white, and sparkling wines. Winemaking plays a vital part in the county’s economy.

It has a total of 1,768 square miles, 1,576 of it being land and 192 being water.

Educational facilities like the Sonoma State University, one of the state’s premier public educational institution for undergraduates, the Santa Rosa Junior College, which is University of California’s feeder school and a number of smaller colleges call this county its home.

Aside from being a Wine County, Sonoma may also be called an Art County.  Thousands of artists and hundreds of art organizations call this county home.  The Sonoma County Museum houses the biggest private collection in the United States of works done by Jeanne-Claude and Christo.  One of California State’s largest performing arts center, the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, presents more than one hundred live performances yearly.  Serving the North Bay region, it offers diverse programs from opera to pop, jazz, rock and roll, country, blues, classical, comedy or world music.  A number of major films were also shot in this county some of which are Braveheart, Magic of Lassie, Scream, Nowhere to Run, and Bandits.

Numerous parks abound in this county which offers various outdoor recreational activities such as camping, fishing, biking, picnicking, horseback riding, golfing, boating, or kayaking at one of the state’s most scenic waterways, the Russian River.
