Stanislaus California Information
Located between Stockton and Fresno in California’s Central Valley, the county was named for the Stanislaus River which, in turn, was named to honor a renegade Miwok Indian Leader Estanislao. Mission educated, Estanislau and his band of about four hundred followers fought against Mexican troops until they were defeated by General Mariano Vallejo in 1826. Estanislao was soon pardoned and returned to mission life, eventually dying from smallpox in 1839.
Stanislaus County is comprised of 23 cities and towns of which the City of Modesto is the county seat and is about a two hour drive from San Francisco and an hour and a half from Sacramento.
Although approximately 25% of Modesto residents commute to jobs outside of the city, most of the working population is employed in food processing and marketing industries. Many of the companies have base operations in Modesto, such as Del Monte Foods, Frito Lay, Blue Diamond Farms, Hershey, Con-Agra and E & J Gallo Winery.
Other than Turlock, which is Stanislaus County’s second largest city, the county is mainly rural and agriculturally based although similar to surrounding inland counties adjacent to the San Francisco Bay Area. The county’s abundant open space has lured developers attracted by the comparatively lower cost of raw land. In turn, Bay Area residents seeking an alternative to soaring housing costs have begun to populate these areas, thus greatly increasing real estate values although not to the point where prices have equaled Bay Area costs.
The influx of former Bay Area residents, among others, has rapidly swelled the population and has led to the establishment of Home Depots, Wal-Mart Stores, Targets, Costco Centers, and the like.
Stanislau County is served by 23 school districts, overseen by the Stanislaus County Office of Education and an increasingly progressive curriculum has raised the standing of the Districts among other School Districts in California.
Stanislaus Real Estate
Soaring home prices have driven Stanislau County’s median home sales costs to $380,000 but rising interest rates and the widened gap between real estate costs and wage gains have slowed sales as of mid-year 2006.
